As with every other part of your application, it’s important to be mindful of how you present the facts and that you do so in such a way that explains rather than excuses. Is It Okay if my Common App Essay is More Than the Stated Word Limit?
In short: absolutely not.
The reason that we say this is because odds are if you’re applying to college, you can read. You’ve learned to follow instructions and what you may or may not know is that the college application process tests that skill more than any other. The college application process is about following instructions and illustrating that you can read, act on the instruction, and complete the task at hand in an exceptional way. If you go over the word limit, then you’re showing that either a) you didn’t read, b) you can’t follow instructions, or c) both. Don’t do it.
What is the Minimum GPA Required for Admission for Ivy League Schools?
Your GPA is arguably the most important part of your application, so it’s crucial to take this aspect of your profile seriously when you’re putting together your school list.
Here’s a bit of a secret for you: there is no such thing as a minimum GPA. You could get a paying entry-level job somewhere for the summer, but it might not be the kind of resume boost you’re looking for.

Not everyone can be a straight A-student, and not everyone can have and maintain a 4.0+ GPA. We get that. While grades and test scores are important in the college admissions process, they aren’t absolutely everything.
