Like many other big cities, San Francisco has a lot to offer to dedicated and driven high school students. And while the Bay Area might be a great place to spend the college years for students interested in a future in tech, it can be difficult for those who are interested in other fields to find their path.
Living in a city like San Francisco, that is primarily known for one industry, means that opportunities can be tailored towards high school students who hope to one day work at Google. When working with clients from the Bay Area, our role is a bit different. We aim to broaden their horizons and help them fine tune their passions, no matter what they’re interested in. We’ll help you figure out what to do outside of school, and find creative ways to engage your interests.
Standing out in the crowd of Bay Area students takes more than good grades and test scores. The college admissions process gets increasingly competitive every year, and top-tier schools are looking for students with dynamic and diverse interests. We’re well versed in creating college lists and helping students from around the world apply to college, and we’ve found that when working with students from San Francisco, the most important thing is fit. They go about the process organically, and care deeply about what schools have to offer, and less about the popularity or status of any given college.
San Francisco Admissions Consulting: Our Method
We’ll meet our client where they are in the process. From there, we’ll take care of the following:
Timeline: By creating a structured plan that maps out exactly what to do, we ensure that our clients are ready to apply to their dream school by the time application season rolls around. Our process is in-depth, and varies by student, but we’ll put together a plan with specific goals that are broken out by year.
Freshman and Sophomore Year: The exploratory phase. We’ll figure out what you like, what you don’t like, and how you can set the wheels in motion. We help our clients explore potential areas of interest through online classes, books, lectures, news articles, and documentaries. During our weekly discussions, we tap in to what’s sticking and build from there.
Junior Year: By this time, we aim to have identified two to four areas of interest. We’ll help you build off of your achievements from years prior and find exciting opportunities that you might not have considered before. We’ll also start your college search early to ensure that you’ll be researching, visiting, and eventually applying to schools that suit your goals.
Senior Year: Should you decide to start early, you won’t be working on your common app essay and supplements the night before they’re due. We’ll put together a manageable plan: start with the common app essay and then complete the supplements in the order in which they’re due. You’ll be done with the college application process by December 1st of your senior year.
Building Out Extracurricular Interests: Most of our clients come to us with a vague idea of how they like to spend their time outside of school. We’ll work to identify two to four areas of interest, and find ways for you to pursue them out of school. By the time you apply to college, you’ll be able to speak with authority on your areas of interest.
Your College List: While many of our San Francisco clients end up at top-tier schools, we love the process of exploring options based on the following:
Admissions Viability
Academic Programs
Culture
Size
Location
Once we’ve considered your performance in high school thus far, we’ll help you create a realistic and exciting college list.
Essay Execution: There are good essays, and then there are good college essays. Understanding the difference is key. We regularly talk to college admissions teams, so we know what they’re looking for and keep that in mind as we work with our clients. There are countless approaches to writing common app essays and supplements, and we take our client essays through hundreds of edits. We work on essays until they’re as strong as possible, and until we can ensure that both our client and their dream school will be happy with the result.
