How to Get into Princeton as an International Student: Strategy

Princeton is a globally renowned university and member of the famed Ivy League. It is also one of the most popular schools in the United States for high-achieving international students. The university has become known for fostering a welcoming community for students from around the world while offering some of the most competitive academic programs on earth, literally. It shouldn’t come as a surprise then, that getting into Princeton is no walk in the park. Admissions is intensely competitive, and even more so for international applicants. In this post, we’re going to break down three steps prospective international applicants must be taking now to raise their odds of a Princeton acceptance. First, though, we’re going to get into some numbers. 

What to Do if You've Been Waitlisted by Princeton 2025

If you were waitlisted by Princeton, you aren’t alone. Princeton is one of the most sought-after admissions in the country, with an acceptance rate, most recently, of only 4.5%.  Like most colleges, Princeton uses a waitlist as a way of ensuring the first-year class is filled. If their yield rate, or the number of accepted students who enroll, is lower than predicted, they can pull from the waitlist to fill the class. Princeton is in such high demand, though, that the waitlist isn’t heavily used. That doesn’t mean that they don’t use the waitlist at all, though.

Rejected Early Action from Princeton 2024-2025

Being rejected by a dream school is a serious punch to the gut. We know you’re smart, capable, and would thrive at Princeton. You got your application together to apply Early to and Ivy, after all. You were ahead of the pack, certain of your strongest path, and ready to move on to college and beyond. Princeton has kept their acceptance rate private in recent years, but it’s estimated to be between 4% and 6%. The Early acceptance rate is significantly higher, but not so high that Princeton can be treated as a target by, really, anyone. It’s a reach no matter how impressive you are. Unless you’re a recruited athlete (and really even then), there is no certainty with Princeton — as you’ve now experienced.  

Deferred by Princeton Single-Choice Early Action 2024-2025

If you received a notice of deferral from Princeton, you aren’t alone. The renowned Ivy League university has historically deferred a large number of single-choice early action applicants, even the majority. This is frustrating, because you still don’t know where you stand and don’t even really have a hint towards how they feel about your application.

Today, we estimate the acceptance rate to be between 4% and 4.5%.

Deferred by Princeton (2023-24)

If you received a notice of deferral from Princeton, you’re probably pretty bummed out — and rightly so! A yes or no is simple. You’re either in or you’re not, but a deferral offers a nebulous possibility of a potential future yes without any of the confidence of a yes nor the finality of a no. You’re fully in your right to take a few moments to wallow in frustration, perhaps aided by ice cream, but it’s important to not stay stuck in that headspace for too long. Princeton is a member of the Ivy League and one of the most selective schools in the United States with an acceptance rate under 6%. If you applied to Princeton and were notified that you are being offered a space on the waitlist, you should know that this is not a ‘soft rejection.’ They aren’t waitlisting you because they don’t want to reject you. The Princeton Admissions Office isn’t mean, but they also aren’t trying to protect your feelings or soften the blow. To put it simply, it isn’t personal. It’s an offer to be on the waitlist, and now the ball is in your court. The question is: what will you do with it?

"Well, I went to Princeton, so of course…" This is a sentence we hate to hear from parents because it usually ends with something to the effect of "my child will get in." We work with a lot of legacies. And many legacy parents believe that their kid getting into a top school like Princeton is a shoo-in. But that simply isn't the case. Legacy admissions are a lot more complicated and a lot more competitive. So let's break it down.

Transferring to Princeton 2023

In 2022, Princeton announced the expansion of their transfer program after years of declining transfer acceptance rates. This is an especially big deal because Princeton paused all transfer programs from 1990 through 2018. Yes. You read that right. For nearly 30 years, Princeton didn’t accept any transfer students — you couldn’t even apply if you wanted to try for the impossible. Now, instead of accepting only a handful of transfer students, they’d accept up to 35.  

Princeton Deferral Rate

Princeton didn’t release their admissions statistics in 2021, but based on the 2020 overall acceptance rate (4.38%), it’s safe to say that if you were deferred from Princeton this year you are far from alone. The reasoning for not releasing the stats, by the way, was that they feel having the numbers freak students — and their parents — out and may discourage them from applying.

Most Unique Programs at Princeton

As an elite school, Princeton requires not only excellent grades and scores, but a stellar resume and a clear mission. You can perfect-score exams all you want, but without distinct and straightforward goals, you won’t be able to successfully pitch yourself to Princeton.
